Why Ride Duration Changes Everything
Ride duration changes what your bottle needs to do. On a short ride it mainly replaces fluid. As the ride gets longer, it must also help replace electrolytes and supply energy.
Your muscles start using stored carbohydrate, or glycogen, as soon as you begin riding. Glycogen does not suddenly run out at 60 or 90 minutes; the rate of use depends on your pace, fitness, body size, pre-ride meal and starting glycogen levels. However, the 60–90-minute window is a useful practical threshold. Beyond it, relying only on stored fuel becomes increasingly risky, particularly during hard group rides, races, hilly routes and fasted training.
That creates three useful cycling nutrition zones:
1. Short rides under 60 minutes: focus on arriving hydrated. Water is normally enough.
2. Medium rides of 60–90 minutes: replace electrolytes when heat, humidity or sweat rate makes losses meaningful. Carbohydrate is optional.
3. Long rides beyond 90 minutes: take in carbohydrate and electrolytes consistently. Beyond three hours, change from a carbohydrate-only drink to a longer-duration fuel containing carbohydrate, protein and a small amount of fat.

What to Drink on Rides of 90 Minutes to 3 Hours
For rides lasting 90 minutes to three hours, use a drink that supplies both carbohydrate and electrolytes. HEED sports drink is designed for this zone.
HEED's main carbohydrate is tapioca maltodextrin rather than sucrose or fructose. One level scoop supplies approximately 28g of carbohydrate and 110 calories, together with a full-spectrum electrolyte blend. The manufacturer's standard mixing range is one to 1.5 scoops in 355–591ml of water. The larger bottle volumes above keep the stronger doses practical for cycling. Do not simply double the powder in the same small bottle: an over-concentrated drink is more likely to sit badly in the stomach.
Sip regularly rather than waiting until you feel empty. In hotter conditions, add an Endurolytes product or carry separate electrolyte capsules if HEED alone does not cover your tested needs. Perpetuem 2.0 combines tapioca maltodextrin, soy protein and a small amount of healthy fat. Two scoops provide approximately 34g of carbohydrate, 5g of protein, 2g of fat and 180 calories. Its carbohydrate-to-protein ratio is approximately 8:1, making it a more complete long-duration fuel than a carbohydrate-only sports drink.
Start using Perpetuem early in the ride; do not wait until the third hour and attempt to rescue an empty tank. Use one to two scoops per hour, with lighter riders generally starting near one scoop and medium-to-larger riders nearer 1.5–2 scoops.
The multi-hour bottle method
1. Decide on your tested hourly dose. For example, 1.5 scoops per hour.
2. Multiply it by the number of hours the bottle must cover. Four hours at 1.5 scoops per hour equals six scoops.
3. Fill the bottle about one-third with water, add part of the powder and shake. Repeat with more water and powder until fully mixed.
4. Mark the bottle into equal hourly sections. For a four-hour bottle, drink one quarter each hour in small sips every 15–20 minutes.
5. Drink plain water from a separate bottle or hydration pack and take electrolytes separately.

What Makes a Good Cycling Sports Drink?
A good cycling sports drink matches the duration and intensity of the ride, provides a tolerable amount of carbohydrate, replaces more than sodium alone and remains easy to drink when you are working hard.
1. The right carbohydrate for the job
For rides under 60 minutes, extra carbohydrate is normally unnecessary. Beyond 90 minutes, carbohydrate becomes useful because it helps maintain energy as stored glycogen declines.
