They treat “electrolyte replenishment” as the same thing as taking salt tablets, or consuming high-sodium foods, fuels, or electrolyte products. Salt (sodium chloride) is important, but it’s not the whole picture. Other minerals — potassium, magnesium, and calcium — are also required, along with sodium and chloride, to meet electrolyte needs properly.
They consume too much salt in their daily diet, or they “preload” their bodies with very large amounts of salt or sodium (often as citrate or bicarbonate) in the hours before a race. Neither approach improves performance — it often ruins it — and it does not support health. Too much sodium, in any form, interferes with the body’s built-in systems that regulate and recycle sodium from body stores.
